Atlantic City casinos employed fewer people this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many more permanent reductions may be on the way. Atlantic City casinos will employ 24,880 people through September 2019, compared with 26,880 in September 2016, a decrease of 1,912 jobs.


According to statistics released this week by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of jobs at Atlantic City casinos fell 1,912 jobs, or 1.5 percent, in September 2016 compared with the same month in 2019, according to a study. Fifteen New Jersey counties were included in the study, which measures all counties, but none was as badly affected as Atlantic County, N.J., which saw the largest drop in the nation. South Jersey County is home to one of the largest and most sustainable hospitality industries in the country, with more than 2,000 casinos and hotels.


The first boardwalk was built to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies, and it wasn't long before the skyline began to change as new skyscrapers, luxury hotels, and casinos began to appear along the boardwalks.

The sideshow and carnival atmosphere that Atlantic City embodied no longer appealed to 1950s vacationers. Atlantic County's tourism sector remains the leading industry in New Jersey, with restaurants in Atlantic County hiring more than 1,000 full-time and part-time workers a year.
