Atlantic City New Jersey History

I like to write about things to do in New Jersey and New York City and other parts of the United States. Atlantic City is known as a seaside resort of New Jersey and was the inspiration for the board game Monopoly. Atlantic City was founded as a resort on the island of Absecon off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

My contribution focuses on the impact that African Americans have had on the history of Atlantic City and the history of the city as a whole. I see the legacy of this story through the eyes of long-standing residents, where I ask them about their lives, their families and their experiences in the area.

The Ocean City Historical Museum, an exciting destination in Atlantic City, offers a variety of fascinating exhibits that tell the story of Atlantic City. From the beginnings of gambling to the development of the city's restaurants, hotels, shops and showrooms, it displays a wide range of artifacts from the past and present, as well as missing pieces of history from around the world.

The world's first seafront promenade was built on a raised wooden walkway designed to keep sand out of hotel lobbies. The first section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk opened in the early 20th century, just a few months after Grand Central Terminal opened in New York City.

In 1978, the Atlantic City Resort, which still operates at the same location on the promenade, became the first legalized Atlantic City casino to be opened to the public. The first casino in the United States, the New Jersey Grand Prix Casino, opened on July 1, 1982, on the west side of the waterfront.

Gambling in Atlantic City became legal after New Jersey voters approved a second attempt to legalize casinos that had failed two years earlier. The first attempt to legalize casinos as a statewide or local option failed, but Atlantic City did not miss the second chance, because in 1976 it passed another bill that legalized casinos only in the city itself.

New Jersey's new law currently allows the operation of sports betting, and soon to follow are online casinos. New Jersey voters will decide on November 8, 2016 whether to amend the Constitution to allow two casinos within 72 miles or more of Atlantic City.

Free jitney shuttles will be provided to ferry rail customers to and from nearby casinos, and many charter bus operators will offer trips to Atlantic City departing from New York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey or other major cities.

Guests can also enjoy free admission to select casinos, bars and restaurants in Atlantic City provided they are operated by NJ.com, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and other local businesses and organizations.
